There are many ways members make GHI a stronger organization and a great place to live. You can volunteer on a Committee or Taskforce, or you can help out at events and activities. To learn more about these opportunities, please visit the list of volunteer openings.
There are three types of committees:
- Elected committees, which are independent from the Board of Directors
- Board-appointed committees, which are appointed by the Board of Directors to serve indefinitely
- Board-appointed task forces, which are appointed by the Board of Directors to work on a specific short-term project
GHI Committees and Task Forces advise the Board of Directors. They study specific problems referred by the Board and suggest solutions. Committees and Taskforces may also exercise initiative within assigned areas of responsibility and may suggest rules, short and long-range plans, programs, and policies. Committees and Taskforces usually meet once a month and these meetings are open to all.
Committees and Taskforces consist of volunteers from the membership. Members interested in helping with solutions are encouraged to complete a GHI volunteer interest form, or contact the Member Services Office.
A three-member Audit Committee, whose duties are described in Article VII Section 2 of the GHI Bylaws, monitors the overall operations of GHI and presents its findings and conclusions to the members in an annual report.

MEMBER OUTREACH COMMITTEE
The purpose of the Member Outreach Committee is to foster a cooperative spirit, encourage member participation in GHI, and provide avenues for member input on issues. It does this through promoting member education in GHI and cooperative principles, organizing outreach to members , providing opportunities for member participation, recruiting and recognizing volunteers, welcoming new members and planning and conducting special functions.
The Woodlands Committee leads efforts to protect and manage the GHI woodlands, fosters their ecological health, encourages GHI members to enjoy nature recreation that has minimal environmental impact, and supports plant and animal biodiversity.
